Is Larch Good Firewood for a Log Burner?

Kiln dried larch can be an excellent choice of firewood for a suitable wood-burning stove.

Larch is a softwood and is particularly useful when you want a fire that establishes readily and produces lively flames and useful heat.

Because the performance of any firewood depends heavily on its moisture content, our larch is kiln dried to below 20% before sale.

Properly dried firewood is easier to burn efficiently than wet wood and can help reduce unnecessary smoke, soot and deposits within your appliance and chimney.

Larch can therefore be a particularly good choice if you value:

  • Easy fire starting
  • Lively, attractive flames
  • Useful heat output
  • Ready-to-use firewood
  • British-sourced logs
  • Good value when buying firewood in bulk

As with all firewood, always follow the fuel and operating instructions supplied by the manufacturer of your stove.

What You Get in a 1.2m³ Bulk Bag

This product contains 1.2 cubic metres of loose-filled larch logs.

Firewood is sold loose-filled because natural logs leave air gaps between each piece. Once the logs are removed and stacked neatly, they occupy less space.

For easier comparison:

Loose-filled volume: approximately 1.2m³
Approximate stacked volume: 0.72m³
Equivalent small bags or nets: up to 43

The exact number of individual logs will vary because firewood is a natural product and every log differs slightly in diameter, shape and split.

Is the 1.2m³ Bulk Bag Right for You?

The 1.2m³ bag is our useful middle-sized larch option.

As a general guide:

Occasional fires: consider the smaller 0.8m³ bulk bag.

Moderate use – around 2–3 fires per week: the 1.2m³ bulk bag is likely to be a good starting point.

Regular use – fires on most nights: consider the larger 1.6m³ bulk bag.

Actual consumption will depend on your stove, its heat output, the size of your property, how long you keep the fire burning and how you operate the appliance.

If you have sufficient dry storage space and know you will use the logs, buying a larger volume can also reduce how frequently you need to reorder.

Ready to Burn British Larch Firewood

Our kiln dried larch firewood has a moisture content below 20% and is supplied Ready to Burn.

Using properly dried firewood means less of the fire’s energy is wasted evaporating excess water before the wood can provide useful heat.

Compared with wet or inadequately seasoned wood, properly dried logs can provide:

  • Easier ignition
  • More efficient combustion
  • Less unnecessary smoke
  • Reduced soot and tar deposits
  • Cleaner stove glass
  • Easier fire management

Our kiln-drying process is powered using electricity generated by on-site solar panels, and the larch supplied in this product originates from Britain.

Larch Log Specifications

Each bulk bag contains naturally shaped split larch logs prepared to approximately the following specification:

Wood species: Larch
Wood type: Softwood
Origin: Britain
Moisture content: Below 20%
Certification: Ready to Burn
Log length: Approximately 25cm / 9.8 inches
Length tolerance: ±10%
Log diameter: Approximately 5–15cm / 2–6 inches
Diameter tolerance: ±10%

The approximately 25cm length is designed to suit the majority of standard domestic wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves.

We recommend checking the maximum fuel dimensions specified by your appliance manufacturer before ordering.

Because firewood is a natural product, differences in bark, colour, shape, split and diameter should be expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are larch logs good for burning?

Yes. Properly dried larch is useful firewood for suitable wood-burning appliances. It lights readily and produces lively flames and useful heat.

Is larch a hardwood or softwood?

Larch is a softwood. Despite being a softwood, kiln dried larch can make practical domestic firewood when used in an appliance designed to burn wood.

Are these logs ready to burn?

Yes. They are kiln dried to a moisture content below 20% and supplied Ready to Burn. Store them somewhere dry after delivery to maintain their condition.

How much wood is in the bag?

The bag contains approximately 1.2m³ of loose-filled firewood. Once neatly stacked, this is approximately 0.72m³ and is equivalent to up to 43 of our small bags or nets of logs.

How long are the larch logs?

The logs are approximately 25cm / 9.8 inches long, with a tolerance of ±10%. Their diameter is typically approximately 5–15cm / 2–6 inches.

Will these logs fit my wood burner?

The approximately 25cm log length is suitable for the majority of standard domestic wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves.

Always check the maximum log dimensions specified by your stove manufacturer before purchasing.

Can I burn these logs in a smoke control area?

Wood can only be burned in a smoke control area in an appropriate DEFRA-exempt appliance, and you should only use fuels permitted by the appliance manufacturer. Ready to Burn certification relates to the moisture and quality requirements for firewood; it does not by itself make every stove suitable for burning wood in a smoke control area.

Do I need to be home for delivery?

Not normally. Provided there is suitable access and the pallet can be left safely on private property, you can leave instructions for the delivery driver.

Is delivery free?

Free bookable weekday delivery is available to most UK mainland addresses. Saturday delivery is available for an additional charge.

Quantity guidance

All stoves and open fires are different, however we’ve put together some estimations for different use-types:

For occasional use, you’ll most likely need either the 40 bag pallet or the 0.8m3 bulk bag. The bulk bag is equivalent to 29 small bags or nets of logs.

For moderate use (2-3 fires per week), either the 60 bag pallet or the 1.2m3 bulk bag will most likely suit your needs. The bulk bag is equivalent to 43 small bags or nets of logs.

For regular use (fires most nights per week), we recommend buying either the 70 bag pallet or 1.6m3 bulk bag. The bulk bag is equivalent to 58 small bags or nets of logs.

Generally the more logs you buy the better value for money your purchase is.
