Where to Buy Firewood in South West England (Guide)
Finding reliable firewood in South West England can be challenging, with so many options ranging from small farm shops to nationwide suppliers. Choosing the right type of logs – and knowing where to source them – makes a big difference in both cost and performance.
This guide explains how to buy quality firewood, what to look out for in terms of moisture content and species, and where to find trusted suppliers in Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire. It’s designed to help householders make informed choices while ensuring compliance with UK regulations and sustainability standards.
Firewood Quality, Moisture and Other Key Considerations
When choosing firewood, quality and seasoning are crucial. Only properly seasoned, dry wood should be burned: UK regulations effectively require logs at or below 20% moisture (the “Ready to Burn” standard). Soft, wet or green wood smoulders, produces smoke and less heat. Aim for hardwoods (oak, ash, birch, beech, hornbeam, etc.) cut and stacked to dry for at least a year. Hardwoods burn hotter and longer than softwoods (pine, fir, larch), which ignite quickly but give less heat.
Firewood is usually sold in cubic metres. A stacked cubic metre (1m³) includes air gaps between neatly piled logs. Loose bulk bags labelled “1m³” often contain only around 0.6–0.7m³ of wood once stacked. Always compare like-for-like and check whether prices are for loose or stacked volume.
Species also matter: Oak and ash burn long and hot, birch lights easily but burns faster, and softwoods like pine are best for kindling. Kiln-dried logs are the most reliable option, giving maximum heat with minimal smoke.
UK Rules and Sustainability Schemes
Wood sold in quantities under 2 m³ must meet the Ready to Burn standard (≤20% moisture). The Woodsure scheme verifies this. In smoke-control areas, you can only burn logs in a DEFRA-exempt stove.
For sustainability, look for wood from FSC or UKWAS certified sources. Many reputable merchants will provide details of their supply chains.
Firewood Buying Checklist
- Confirm moisture levels (≤20%).
- Ask what species are included.
- Clarify how volume is measured.
- Check delivery terms and minimum order sizes.
- Prepare a dry storage space.
- Always buy from reputable, certified suppliers.
Types of Retailers
- Garden centres and DIY stores: Small, seasonal nets of logs, convenient but often expensive.
- Timber and coal merchants: Year-round supply, larger volumes, often Woodsure certified.
- Online specialists: Wide choice and home delivery, often with free delivery radius.
- Farmers or sawmills: Often cheaper, but quality varies.
- Tree surgeons: Low-cost bulk wood, but usually unseasoned.
