Firewood Buying Guide

Kiln-Dried vs. Seasoned Wood

• Moisture content: Always aim for logs with ≤20% moisture.
• Kiln-dried logs: Force-dried, “Ready to Burn” certified, usable immediately, hotter and cleaner burn.
• Seasoned logs: Air-dried, often good if properly stored, but confirm dryness.
• Avoid green wood: It smokes, wastes heat, and can tar chimneys.

Tip: Carry a moisture meter. Ideal readings are 15–20%.

Hardwood Species and Burn Qualities

• Ash: Easy to light, steady flame, very efficient.
• Oak: Dense, slow-burning, excellent heat but needs long seasoning.
• Birch: Quick to ignite, bright flame, but burns faster.
• Beech & Sycamore: Reliable hardwoods, similar to ash.
• Softwoods: Ignite quickly, burn faster, best for kindling or quick heat.

Log Sizes and Volume Measurements

• Length: Standard logs ~25cm (10″). Smaller stoves may need 20cm, larger fireplaces can take 30cm+.
• Volume: Be careful how wood is measured.
  • Loose cubic metre: ~0.6–0.7 stacked cubic metres.
  • Nets: Small, handy, but expensive per log.
  • Barrow bags: ~0.2–0.3m³. Good for tight access.
  • Bulk bags: ~0.6–0.8m³ loose.
  • Crates (stacked): 1m³ stacked ≈ 1.6m³ loose.

Always ask how the seller measures.

UK Rules and Compliance

• Ready to Burn certification: Required for small quantities under 2m³.
• Smoke Control Areas: Common in cities like Leeds, Sheffield, Hull, York. You need a DEFRA-exempt stove and dry wood.
• Appliance approval: Always confirm if your stove is DEFRA-approved.

Sustainability

• Look for FSC/UKWAS-certified suppliers or ask about sourcing.
• Many local suppliers use by-products from estates, farms, or tree surgery.
• Buying locally reduces transport emissions and supports the rural economy.
