Burning Wood in Cambridge? Check the Smoke Control Rules

Cambridge currently has three smoke control areas covering the west and centre of the city, and Cambridge City Council is progressing a citywide smoke control area. Until the new citywide order takes effect, the existing areas remain in force.

If your property is within a smoke control area and you want to burn wood, the council says you should use a Defra-exempt appliance and Ready to Burn fuel. Kiln-dried wood is not the same thing as smokeless fuel, so check the latest council guidance and the rules applying to your exact address and appliance before burning.

This is one reason it is useful to check both the product specification and your local requirements rather than choosing firewood on price or species alone.

Compare Firewood by Usable Volume, Storage and Handling

Terms such as “bulk bag”, “crate” and “pallet” describe different formats, but they are not interchangeable measurements of the amount of timber you receive. A loose-filled bulk bag contains air gaps between randomly positioned logs, while a crate contains stacked wood. A bulk bag should not be treated as a guaranteed tonne of firewood.

If you light a stove only occasionally, a modest quantity that is easy to store may be more useful than a bigger load.
