Cheap Firewood
Is cheap firewood really a worthwhile investment?
It’s a common mistake for wood burning stove, fire pit and chiminea owners to assume that because cheap firewood logs are more affordable to buy, they will result in more burning time, and therefore offer greater value. In reality, investing in cheap logs is likely to be a false economy. If you’re experienced in the area of wood burning fires and appliances, you’ll know that with firewood, much like most other consumer options, quality outweighs quantity. There are a number of reasons that cheaper ‘seasoned’ firewood is likely to be inferior to kiln-dried hardwood logs, such as:
- Cheap firewood is often sold in a more organic state, meaning that it will most likely have retained moisture. This leads to inefficient burning and can reduce the life of your wood burning stove
- Often softer woods are used for cheaper logs, meaning they are less dense and burn up faster than hardwood logs
- In many cases, cheap firewood logs will not comply with the new government regulations requiring logs for burning to be kiln dried, to help reduce pollution
Why are Kiln-Dried Hardwood Logs a better solution to your wood burning needs?
Many cheap firewood logs are seasoned, rather than kiln-dried. Whilst this process allows for some of the moisture to be ‘aired out’ of the logs, they will still retain significantly more moisture than kiln-dried logs. The kiln drying process reduces moisture far more quickly than seasoning, leaving them ready to burn within hours. The usual standard for kiln-dried logs is to contain a minimum of 20% moisture, which allows for optimum burning efficiency. The superior dryness of kiln-dried logs means that logs will light more easily, and burn at hotter temperatures than seasoned firewood. If you’re a wood-burning stove owner, this will maximise the efficiency of use, as you can set the oxygen intake to minimum, prolonging the burn duration of the logs. If it’s an open fire or campfire you’re buying for, kiln-dried logs are, again, the best choice. Softwood kiln-dried logs kindle quickly, creating larger flames that spread rapidly, with less effort needed on your part. Hardwood kiln-dried logs, on the other hand, are the ideal fuel to keep the fire burning for longer, once you’ve got it started.
